Russian anti-corruption activist Alexei Nawalny has been put in a detention cell for ten days for organizing a rally against police arbitrariness. A Moscow court sentenced him to the penalty for attending an unauthorized rally on June 12.

"Not nice, but I think I did it right, if we keep silent and stay at home, that arbitrariness will never stop," Nawalny wrote in the short message service Twitter.

Nawalny had organized the march as a statement of solidarity for the investigative journalist Ivan Golunov, but the demonstration was also directed against police arbitrariness in general. Golunov had been released a day earlier surprisingly. Because authorities had not approved the demonstration, the police used force against the protesters. Around 400 people were arrested.

The reporter Golunov had revealed mafia structures and corruption in police circles. The police had drugged the journalist to prevent him from prosecuting his job. The case Golunov triggered in Russia and internationally horror.

Finally, Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin intervened. Golunov was released again and is now under witness protection because he fears for his life. Putin dismissed in a Russian circumstances unusual process and two police people. It was not until the weekend that Putin himself had spoken of arbitrariness and injustice in the case. Nawalny pointed in the court to the words of the President and stressed that he had made similar statements.

Nawalny is one of the most prominent critics of the Russian president. Again and again he was arrested and sentenced. For the anti-corruption fighter comes the recent ten-day arrest at an inopportune time. He is currently involved in the election campaign of the Russian capital, Moscow elects on September 8, a new city parliament.

The punishment of the court brought Nawalny in connection with the fact that he is to be put off in the election campaign and in his commitment to independent candidates by arrest. He stressed that he had done nothing wrong at the rally for Golunov.

Again and again, the Kremlin critic with Internet videos about corrupt politicians in government circles causes a stir. On the basis of land register files, for example, he reveals that the families of Kremlin politicians own property worth millions.

On Monday, Nawalny accused a leading politician of the ruling party United Russia, his family owned property worth 5.7 billion rubles (80 million euros), including several hotels in Austria. Most possession is therefore in the name of the 75-year-old mother of the politician. The deputy of the city parliament told the radio station Echo Moskwy that he had nothing to do with the real estate.
