The basic idea of the film is original. The movie "Yesterday" begins with a worldwide blackout, 12 seconds around the globe everything is dark. Just then, hobby guitarist Jack Malik, who has not been very successful so far, rides his bike on a bus, loses two incisors and is taken to the hospital.
When he comes to, the world has changed – at least in a fantastic detail. In the hospital bed Jack is humming a catchy tune of the Beatles, which is just going through his head – which his manager and longtime girlfriend Ellie looks at him in astonishment. But it gets even better.

After Jack leaves the hospital and his friends have organized a small welcome party, they sit together, Jack grabs his guitar, sings and plays the Beatles evergreen "Yesterday". The friends are excited. How did he get that great song? The lyrics, the melody, the whole arrangement as simple as it is ingenious?

Now it's up to Jack to look puzzled. "Yesterday", every kid knows that, that's the Beatles! But then it turns out: Nobody knows "Yesterday", nobody has ever heard of the Beatles, no "Let it be", no "She Loves You", not the century LP "St. Pepper". In fact, all Beatles records have disappeared from the shelves, there are no recordings, not a single picture of the four musicians, nowhere.

This is the crazy starting position of the film, actually untrustworthy, but also somehow charming. Director Danny Boyle sends his lead actor Jack Malik, whom Himesh Patel, hitherto known only from a BBC soap, embodies, on a surprising journey to musical success. Malik has played on his guitar in pedestrian zones and in poorly visited bars – now he is suddenly sitting on a musical treasure of unimaginable proportions.

And actually, he is embarrassed. He does not want to decorate himself with foreign feathers. But because no-one wants to believe that there once was a well-known pop group called "Beatles" that wrote hits like "Yesterday" or "Let it be", fate takes its course. Jack becomes a superstar, an ingenious songwriter who fills big halls with thousands of spectators.
He receives recognition and help from another well-known songwriter, Ed Sheeran, who plays himself in the film. He must realize that there is an even more ingenious young man on earth, who apparently got the gift of the hit production in the cradle.

Danny Boyle, who became a cult director with a film about "Trainspotting", whose "Slumdog Millionaire" won eight Oscars and the last Apple inventor Steve Jobs put a surprisingly critical cinematic memorial, was actually as a director for the 25th James Bond film firmly booked.
