1. The opening film
The American independent icon Jim Jarmush opens the festival on May 14th. With "The Dead Do not Die", the director presents a not quite serious zombie movie. Billy Murray and Adam Driver are playing a slightly jerky cop team, dealing with lots of bloody undead. Tilda Swinton and Danny Glover as well as music veterans Iggy Pop and Tom Waits are also in the satirical horror strip. On the red carpet, it should therefore be close to the festival opening.
Second The competition
Subsequently, twenty more films compete for the Golden Palm. As always, the festival has big names, many regulars from previous years, but also a few newbies. Spain's Grandmaster Pedro Almodóvar presents his new melodrama, Belgium's two-time winners Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne. The neighboring country of France has traditionally had a hard time in Cannes. German directors are rarely invited by festival makers on the Côte d'Azur. The Palm Race 2019 will take place once again without German filmmakers. After all, Germany is represented by money in the competition in 2019: Four co-productions were created with German funding. The German-language film is in the process, however, in that the Austrian Jessica Hausner was invited to the competition with "Little Joe".
