The Iranian was an employee of the aerospace department in the Tehran Ministry of Defense, the semi-official Iranian news agency ISNA reported, citing the military. He admitted to spying on payment for the CIA.
According to a report of the web portal of the state broadcaster IRIB, the man and his wife had already been arrested in 2010 for spying allegations. After years of investigation, a military court sentenced the man to death. It has now become known that, following the affirmation of the Supreme Court ruling, he was hanged early this week in the Karzad Rajzhahr Prison. His wife was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
The espionage case was uncovered by the secret service of the Ministry of Defense, the agency ISNA reported. Documents and espionage tools were found in the man's house.
Spy network spotted
A few days ago, Iran had reported the detection and destruction of a new spy network with links to the CIA. Several spies were arrested, reported the news agency IRNA, citing a secret service agent, without giving details. The relationship between the US and Iran is currently extremely strained.
