Philippines - Food from the garbage dump | Global Ideas | '
Project goal: The Sustainable Diner is a project designed to reduce food waste in the hospitality industry. Filipino businesses and consumers should become more aware of sustainable consumption.
Project Implementation: Cooperation with restaurants and hotels in the cities of Quezon, Tagaytay and Cebu. They should take measures to avoid food waste. This also includes serving smaller portions.
Project Partner: WWF Philippines, Climate Change Commission of the Philippines, Ministry of Tourism of the Philippines, supported by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety within the framework of the International Climate Initiative (IKI).
More than 13 million Filipinos can not afford three meals a day. Filipa Balde and her family are among them. Filipa provides her family with so-called "pagpag". (The locals call Tagalog remnants of the garbage dump in their language.) The 67-year-old has no choice since her husband died.
Unlike people like Filipa, the country's growing middle class has plenty to eat. In Manila alone, more than 2,000 tons of food ends up in trash every year. Much of it comes from restaurants.
Projects such as The Sustainable Diner seek to raise awareness of the problem and its impact on the environment. The government wants to get companies to give away surplus food so they can help people like Filipa.
