Not only El Salvador bears grief | Currently America | '
According to news channel CNN en EspaƱol, media representatives are not allowed to attend the funeral this Monday. The funeral celebrations take place in a private circle.
The 25-year-old man and his 23-month-old baby daughter drowned in an attempt to cross the Rio Grande River to reach the Mexican border town of Matamoros in the US state of Texas.
Treacherous currents were fatal
The river is not particularly deep, but the currents are treacherous. In the photo you can see both lying face down in the shallow water on the bank of the border river. The man's T-shirt holds them both together, the child's arm is wrapped around his father's neck.
The 21-year-old woman had to watch the tragedy. The family had left El Salvador for poverty and lack of prospects. Nayib Bukele, president of the Central American country, promised the family financial support and payment for the transport of corpses that have since been transferred. The mother of the child and widow of the man had already arrived on Friday by plane in El Salvador.
Tens of thousands of Central American migrants flee violence and poverty in their home countries every month, trying to get into the US via Mexico. According to figures from the United Nations, 442 migrants died on the border between Mexico and the USA last year. There have been 175 migrants so far this year, including 13 children.
