New German non-fiction book | Books | '
It's hard to believe, but the non-fiction book is doing very well in Germany. Against the trend, sales rose by five and a half percent last year. So why a sales-promoting award, where there are already a number of non-fiction books?
"We want to stimulate debates as a book industry, which are more necessary today than ever before," says Heinrich Riethmüller of the Foundation book culture and reading promotion of the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels, which is awarded the prize. "
This price, he adds, is a long-cherished wish of the book trade, which wants to offer orientation in a confusing market. However, the popular guides will not be among the winners, and a historical biography probably only if there is a current reference to current affairs.
First award ceremony in the summer of 2020
A jury of scientists, booksellers and journalists will nominate for the first time from November this year eight books from the titles proposed by publishers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Unlike the German Book Prize, which will be awarded for the 15th time this year and is the best novel of the year, there will be no long or shortlist at the German Non-Fiction Book Prize. There will be a good two months between the publication of the selected books and the award. Time enough, therefore, to devote yourself to the content of the books and to be able to discuss them. Riethmüller hopes that the book industry will also use this to give the nominated titles a stage.
In the tradition of Alexander von Humboldt
The prize is to be awarded in the tradition of the famous researcher Alexander von Humboldt
The award ceremony will take place for the first time on June 16, 2020, in the Berlin Humboldt Forum, which will be opened in autumn 2019. That such an illustrious place was found can actually be called a coup. Lavinia Frey of the Humboldt Forum Foundation sees the award as in the tradition of the eponymous Alexander von Humboldt: Relevant social issues should be made accessible to a broad public. The founders of the prize – the main sponsor is the Deutsche Bank Foundation – now hope that the site and the occasion will become a social event.
