Monster Cinema: "Godzilla II" against the rest of the world | Movies | '

culture life film

It is common for Godzilla to destroy entire cities and their inhabitants. That's what monsters do. In the now starting sequel "Godzilla II: King of Monsters" Godzilla attacks apparently also the currently so popular superhero films. The superhero genre has recently broken all box office records. The latest "Avengers" movie is rinsing millions into the box office and pulverizing many blockbuster records.

The clou of the last superhero films was that several heroes of the pop and comic culture heroes in the movies were hounded together or went to war together. According to the motto: A hero counts more than two and three are even better.

Effective blockbuster strategy: monster movie with many monsters

The principle now also attacks "Godzilla II". In the current film, which starts now worldwide (starting on 29 May in some European and Asian countries, one day later, among other things, Germany is on it and on May 31, the Americans may go to the movies), meet with Godzilla, the three-headed King Ghidorah, the giant moth Mothra and the pterodactyl Rodan are four monsters on each other.

In 1954, the first Godzilla movie was a product of the nuclear age

The four fight for supremacy in the world, humanity is threatened. Thus, the destruction orgies appear even bigger on the screen, as it is always new battles and fights that can be staged. In addition, the superhero films and the new Godzilla strips include and integrate elements of various genres: horror film, science fiction, disaster film.

Godzilla against King Kong, Japan against the USA

Connoisseurs of cinematic history, however, know that everything has happened before. Just older Godzilla films had quickly discovered the principle of success: More powerful than a monster are two monsters: "Godzilla versus King Kong" was the third film of the Godzilla series from 1962. Even then, the American giant monkey met the Japanese lizard monster ,

Monster movies are always science movies with the question: how to stop the monster?

The logic was simple. Although a monster may have great destructiveness, cities and entire landscapes can be reduced to ashes. But two? Or even more? The imagination of the creatives in film were and are no limits. And so, in the history of popular monster genre cinema, the giants of the screen have always clashed.

Film titles with Frankenstein and King Kong as empty promises

And sometimes the titles of the movies promised more than they actually showed. In Germany, some Godzilla films with misleading titles in the cinemas came: So, for example, King Kong or Frankenstein appeared in the titles of lenders – but neither the giant monkey nor the human monster assembled by scientists from corpse parts then played a role in the following film.

The horrified look is part of the essence of the monster movie

From the original basic idea of the very first Godzilla film of 1954, the umpteenth successor has long since been resolved. If the original Godzilla was a symbol of the unexpected consequences of the atomic armament, its successors stood for many things: environmental destruction, the depletion of man in nature and animals, climate change, out-of-control animal experiments, genetic engineering and much more. The monsters took quite positive traits. Godzilla was not always the frightening villain.

"Godzilla II" offers great destruction against a gloomy backdrop

In the new Godzilla movie, of course, the monster does what it does best – and what the viewer probably expects: beat everything short, destroy what it is to destroy and spread fear and terror among the people. All this has been dipped into a dark setting by director and producer: popcorn cinema to scare.
