Migrants: MPs want to lower the price of the residence card

Europe

Stella Dupont (LREM) and Jean-François Parigi (LR) estimate the prices of residence permits too high for people with limited income.

Their report was presented to the Finance Committee. MPs Stella Dupont (LREM) and Jean-François Parigi (LR) want the price of residence cards issued to migrants to be lowered to better match the means of applicants for securities, reports LCP.

Taxes finally paid by associations … financed by the State

At present, the price of a temporary authorization on the French territory costs 269 euros, up to 609 euros. The price of a passport is 89 euros and the identity card is free. In their report, the two deputies consider that the amounts practiced are "excessive" and "accentuate the precariousness of certain foreigners, even hinder their integration". The Macronist MP Stella Dupont, who abstained from voting on the "Asylum-Immigration" law, deplores the fact that "immigrants are presented as profiteers while they pay more than nationals".

Republican Jean-François Parigi regrets that these taxes on the residence permit are actually financed by the state. Undocumented migrants who are struggling to pay are often helped by associations, which are themselves funded by the state. "This is utterly hypocritical," says the MP. "By different paths, by different political orientations (LR and LREM), we reach similar conclusions: we must lower the price of residence cards," the parliamentarians write.

Concretely, Stella Dupont and Jean-François Parigi propose to reduce to 100 euros the price of the residence card and to halve the price during a renewal. In addition, they advise issuing multi-year residence permits to extend payments for foreigners. According to MEPs, this estimated loss of 38 million euros can be offset by tourist visas, which should soon be increased.
