Mexico sends soldiers to US border | Currently America | '

Defense Minister Luis Cresencio Sandoval announced the arrival of 15,000 troops at a press conference with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The security forces had been sent to the border on the weekend following an agreement with the US government. There they are to stop or arrest migrants.

So far, the Mexican security forces have rarely set up refugees on the US border. According to Minister Sandoval, this will now change. However, since migration is "not a crime", but rather an "administrative offense", the refugees should only be taken into custody and then handed over to the authorities.

Mexican policemen on duty against migrants heading north

US President Donald Trump had put massive pressure on the southern neighbor to stop migrants on their way to the US and threatened punitive tariffs if the country did not stop the illegal migration to the US. As of June 10, five per cent of all imports from Mexico should be levied, and then five per cent per month from July until 25 per cent were reached in October.

Only the southern border – now the northern border

The governments of both countries then adopted a migration agreement in early June. Among other things, Mexico undertook to deploy 6,000 national guards on its southern border in the fight against illegal immigration; now an additional 15,000 troops are ordered to the northern border.

Trump's election promises so far waste

The fight against illegal immigration was one of Trump's main themes during the election campaign. However, the number of migrants has been rising steadily since the beginning of his term of office.

Tens of thousands of Central American migrants, most of them from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, flee the violence and poverty in their home countries every month, trying to get into the US via Mexico. People from the Caribbean, Africa and Asia are also choosing the dangerous route through Mexico. In May alone, 144,000 immigrants were arrested on the border with Mexico, including 57,000 minors – the highest number in 13 years.
