Guest Commentary: Xi Jinping 's Signals to Kim Jong Un | Comments | '

With his visit to North Korea, Chinese state and party leader Xi Jinping has sent numerous signals. Inside, he showed that it is he to listen to the other statesmen. This is exactly what Xi sends to Donald Trump. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, on the other hand, has had to (re) learn that he can rely on China in one respect – when it comes to preserving the state of North Korea. But it is also clear that China is still not ready to tolerate a nuclear power North Korea.

For the time being, all efforts to resolve the nuclear conflict are threatened with this fundamental problem. Kim Jong Un – supported by China and Russia on this issue – is determined to ease the sanctions imposed on his country. He is prepared to provide more or less symbolic consideration. The United States, with more than tacit support from China and Russia, wants to end North Korea's nuclear weapons once and for all.

However, Kim still does not seem ready for that. This attitude has already resulted in the failure of the meeting with Trump in Hanoi. Kim's rule is no longer based as much on the military as his father's. But the generals would not be happy if they took away their prestigious nuclear weapons. And if there were a political and personal constellation that would guarantee the existence of North Korea as a state, but could dispense with Kim Jong Un and his family, China's own interests would still be safeguarded.

That despite all the friendly pictures and gestures, not everything is unclouded in the relationship of China to North Korea also shows the remark that the atmosphere at the meeting was "serious and open". Kim Jong Un will have to deal with the idea that he can not permanently have the best of all worlds for himself. Already the meeting in Hanoi revealed his miscalculation: He had thought that one could cheer Donald Trump a Mogelpackung. That failed. Xi Jinping is a different caliber: He has a strategy. And above all, he has the power to help North Korea, or not. And that is perhaps the most important signal of this visit in the end.
