Does spinach have to be on the doping list of WADA? | Currently World | '

Popeye effect in elite sports: Spinach gives superpowers – and a substance contained therein belongs to the doping list. This opinion is expressed by Maria Parr from the Institute of Pharmacy of the Free University of Berlin. She led a study, which stated: The substance ecdysterone leads to a significantly higher power gain and an increase in performance – as demonstrated by the cartoon character.

The study was supported by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). During a ten-week strength training, 46 athletes were given either a placebo or the substance ecdysterone. The result: a three-fold increase in strength compared to the placebo group. Similar results had already been shown in previous studies in other countries.

"Our hypothesis was that we see an increase in performance, but we did not expect it to be that big," said Parr in an interview with broadcasters ARD and Arte.

The professor recommended that WADA put Ecdysteron on the doping list. Whether this will happen is decided by a competent expert panel of WADA. At first, however, further investigations are awaited to find out how widespread the use of ecdysterone is in top-class sport.
