Comment: The Olympic bar for Milan is high | Sports | '

NEWS

First of all, congratulations Milan! For the first time, the metropolis in northern Italy is hosting Winter Olympics. Where Milan gives above all its sonorous name. The vast majority of decisions are made in those winter sports resorts that are known from the various World Cups: Cortina d'Ampezzo, Bormio, Val di Fiemme. Cortina experiences thereby a Déjà Vu: 1956 was the winter sports resort only olympic organizer.

Olympic hopping hardly possible

There are no games of short distances, says ‘ editor Stefan Nestler

The games of Milan will not be one of the short ways: Hardly a resident of the metropolis will spontaneously set off to the winter sports resorts further north to get a taste of the Olympic air. It takes about four and a half hours to reach Cortina by car, three and a half to Val di Fiemme, three hours to Bormio. And Cortina and Bormio are separated by four and a half hours by car. "Olympic hopping" makes little sense, so a Milan Olympic feeling is unlikely to arise. The Italians actually deserve this. Finally, according to the IOC survey, 83 percent of them are behind the games – which may well have been the decisive factor in favor of Milan. The Swedish people's approval for games in Stockholm was only 55 percent.

Sustainable, less expensive

The International Olympic Committee has certainly moved. All interested parties were advised to develop Olympic concepts and to fill them with life. The IOC also distanced itself from the – incidentally, self-inflicted – gigantism of past winter games and now focuses more on sustainability: 80 percent of the Olympic sports venues in northern Italy either already exist or, if they have to be built, subsequently be removed. The planned budget of Milan is about 1.3 billion euros, 75 percent below the Olympic budget of Beijing 2022. Both would have incidentally also for the defeated candidate Stockholm.

Hardly available

However, the fact that – as was the case with the last decision, when Beijing and Almaty vied for the Games in 2022 – that in the end only two candidates were left, raises a fundamental question: Are Olympic Winter Games still up-to-date? Almost all other interested parties jumped off prematurely, after the respective population had signaled that they wanted no winter games in the area. Even if they should still be timely, Olympic Winter Games are obviously barely mediated. The IOC is now paying the bill for the gigantism of earlier games – regardless of the fact that Thomas Bach and Co. have long ago been advocating a move away from it. There would be an urgent need for exciting winter games, as in Lillehammer in Norway in 1994, when the Olympic spark spilled over to less winter sports fans. This is unlikely to happen at the next Beijing Games. The higher the bar for Milan. Well then, congratulations!
