Comment: Last chance for Germany car manufacturer | Comments | '
These were unusually clear words of the Chancellor at the beginning of June at the so-called "Day of German Industry": In response to the sharp criticism of the top industry lobbyist ("Government policy harms the company") Angela Merkel coolly said that she could also talk about it, " how long I have spent dealing with the loss of confidence of the German automotive industry and the rule violations. "
This was not the first counter-attack by the Chancellor against the auto industry, but showed yet again her change of consciousness. When it came in the past to new limits for exhaust gases, which wanted to decide the European Commission, Merkel was the first in Brussels, that it was not so bad for the auto companies in the end.
Goal clearly missed
Since then, it has not happened once that motorists were summoned to the Chancellery for rapport. This is usually called, as on Monday evening, "car peak". In reality, the government wants to know when it finally starts with the electric automobile revolution. Actually, so the target of the policy, so should drive from the coming year, a million electric cars on Germany's streets and 100,000 public charging stations ensure that you just do not lie with exhausted battery in nirvana.
Henrik Böhme, ‘-Wirtschaftsredaktion
That this goal will be missed is as clear as anything. Just 83,000 cars (of 47 million cars in total) with pure electric drive are "on the road", charging points there are 17,400. But Germany is not a planned economy where such goals can be ordered. The market should regulate it. But as long as e-cars are much more expensive than those with conventional drives, as long as the lack of a sufficient number of charging stations, the uncertainty is there to be unable to achieve its goal over long distances, such a market just does not get going. Then the state can intervene stimulating (which he does with a purchase premium). But where does the German car industry take the chutzpah and does politics make new demands, namely that: We increase the supply of e-cars and you, dear state, finance the charging stations – remains the secret of the reigns between Wolfsburg and Stuttgart. How was it 100 years ago? Has the state also built the gas stations? Or was not it the mineral oil companies?
New alliances asked
Now, of course, new players come into play. Paving the land with electric charging stations that are powered by surrounding wind turbines and solar systems (only then does an electric car make sense) – that would have to be a huge business model! But not just for Aral, Shell and Co, but for the energy suppliers Eon, RWE and Co. They are still looking for new sources of revenue when they get lost the old power plants soon. Maybe even new alliances could form between ex-oil and ex-coal companies. So please, dear Daimlers, VWs and all the other carmakers: Consider this again with this outrageous demand. After all, you've shown goodwill and want to build a European charging network together (called Ionity). But 400 stations in 18 countries: That can only be a start!
Of course it all costs a lot of money. Also, the many new electric cars, which are now (finally) to come, devoured billions in the development. And, of course, the billion-dollar penalties for Dieselgate have to be paid. But that should not be passed on to consumers. Because they did not trick, but they were cheated by VW and Co. One can not help but note: The development of e-mobility, the German manufacturers overslept, because limit values have been manipulated!
Politics now give carmakers the unique opportunity to make up for this mistake. The German manufacturers still have the chance to be at the forefront of e-car manufacturers with their know-how, their skills and their engineering skills (which Tesla can never do). Believing the promises, it seems as if the manufacturers understood. A little bit anyway. Because: This year, for the first time in Germany, more than one million cars will be admitted to a very special category. Unfortunately, all SUV's with conventional internal combustion engine.
