12,000 jobs and six factories will be canceled by the end of next year, as the group announced. Ford had already announced a job cuts and plant closures in several countries as part of an austerity program. This should make the business profitable again. Like other manufacturers, the US company is struggling with sluggish sales figures, while costs are rising due to stricter emission regulations and the development of electric drives. Ford Europe had slipped deep into loss in 2018. However, the situation has improved somewhat. For the full year, the management expects a "significant improvement" in the financial result.
Ford of Europe President Stuart Rowley said the separation of employees and plant closures are the toughest decisions a management has to make. The company wants to "help the affected employees to mitigate the impact". This is usually governed by social plans and severance pay.

Most of this overcapacity will be reduced by voluntary separation programs by the end of 2020.
