The government in Brasilia announced the turnaround in the issue of arms in the Official Journal. The Senate had already voted a week ago to override the regulation. The decree, which was now stopped, allowed politicians, farmers, truck drivers, hunters and marksmen to wear weapons in public. The ultra-right head of state had already promised an easing of weapons law during the election campaign. Shortly after taking office in January, he allowed the Brazilians by decree to buy up to four firearms and keep them at home or at work. In early May, he then liberalized the import and distribution of weapons in Brazil and increased the allowable sales of ammunition.
Even more acts of violence feared
The president argues that if "good citizens" had weapons, the rampant violence and crime in the South American country could be tackled. However, the liberalization of arms legislation has been criticized by sections of the judiciary, some governors and human rights organizations. Critics fear an increase in violence by relaxing the arms laws.
In Latin America's largest country, nearly 64,000 murders were registered in 2017 – an average of around 175 per day. The murder rate nationwide at 30.8 per 100,000 inhabitants. This makes Brazil one of the most dangerous countries outside a war zone worldwide.
