The US House of Representatives has released $ 4.6 billion (four billion euros) to fight the humanitarian crisis on the Mexican border. Part of the money should also flow into the border guard. The Congress Chamber passed the relevant law as part of an overall package with 305 to 102 votes.
The decision is considered the defeat of Democratic House Chair Nancy Pelosi. It wanted to impose stricter conditions on the government for housing migrant children, but could not prevail against the Republicans and some members of their own party.
Severe hygienic defects
The conditions in the often overcrowded camps for unaccompanied minors picked up at the border had recently made headlines. Human Rights Watch officials said many children in the facilities have no regular access to showers and clean clothes.

Originally, the House of Representatives had passed its own version of the law this week, requiring stricter safeguards for those affected. However, the Senate, in which the ruling Republicans have the majority, passed its own draft.
Pelosi finally gave in and justified this in a letter to her party colleagues with the fact that the aid would have to benefit the migrants quickly. The approval of the Senate bill, however, is accompanied by a "battle cry" that more must be done to protect children.
