A US military plane has been shot down in the international airspace over the Strait of Hormuz with an Iranian surface-to-air missile, a US official told Reuters on Thursday.
Iran has announced a short time ago that its Revolutionary Guards shot down an American spy plane in the territory of Hormuzgan, which overlooks the Strait of Hormuz south of the country; while the United States denied it.
The plane was dropped when it entered Iranian airspace, near the area of Koh Mubarak, to the south, the state-run IRNA news agency and Saba News, the media arm of the Revolutionary Guards, said.
According to the Sky News, the Iranian agency explained that the projected plane was a type of "RQ4 Global Hook," and was intended to collect intelligence.
However, spokesman for the US Central Command Bill Uruban, told the Associated Press: "There were no aircraft over Iranian territory.
Iran's state television did not offer any pictures of the plane, the focus of the incident, which comes amidst tension between Iran and the United States.
The US military on Wednesday raised its charges against Iran for responsibility for an attack on a Japanese tanker in the Sea of Oman on June 13.
A Japanese and Norwegian oil tanker – the last Khamis – was attacked twice as they were sailing near the Strait of Hormuz.
The attacks came a month after two Saudi oil tankers, a Norwegian tanker and a UAE cargo ship were sabotaged in the Gulf of Oman by the UAE's economic waters.
Washington also blamed Tehran, which also denied any responsibility.
